The people behind Smiths advice.

A family practice in Christchurch, advising Kiwis right across New Zealand.

Still a family practice.

Two more advisers have joined since Craig started it, the address has stayed the same street, and so has the promise.

Craig Smith started Smiths after leaving AMP Society, to advise Cantabrians directly rather than through a big insurer’s own sales force. The practice has been part of Christchurch ever since, including through the earthquakes and the years of rebuild that followed, when clients needed an adviser who actually picked up the phone.

Forty plus years on, Smiths is still a family advice practice and still based in Christchurch, at Powell Fenwick House on Colombo Street. The team now works with Kiwis right across New Zealand, not just Canterbury, but the way we work hasn’t changed: compare properly, explain it in plain language, and stay on your file if you ever need to claim.

Three advisers. One Christchurch practice.

Craig Smith, Founder and Managing Director of Smiths

Craig Smith

Founder & Managing Director · Principal Adviser

Craig founded Smiths and still runs the practice as Managing Director and Principal Adviser. More than forty years in the industry means he has watched products, insurers and the rules around advice change many times over, and he knows the products inside out.

He is a very personal adviser. Craig is always keen to help, still likes picking up the phone himself, and is the reason many long-standing clients still deal with the same adviser who wrote their first policy. He has seen Smiths clients through the Christchurch earthquakes, the rebuild and the claims since.

He holds the NZ Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5), covering life, disability and health insurance, general insurance and investments. Above all, he is someone you can feel comfortable having in your corner.

Guy takes the time clients need. He is always happy to help, answers the detailed questions properly, and puts real care and effort into getting every recommendation right.

Henry Smith, Senior Financial Adviser at Smiths

Henry Smith

Senior Financial Adviser

Henry returned to Christchurch from Australia in early 2026 after studying Business Economics at the University of Queensland. He has long been interested in finance and investing, and took a keen interest in how Smiths could grow and reach more people.

Henry has helped develop the firm’s marketing and online presence, contributing to its recent growth. He enjoys working out how things can be done better. Naturally analytical, he gets into the detail, questions assumptions and often sees a different way to approach a problem.

Henry listens carefully, takes questions seriously and gives people the time to understand the thinking behind his advice.

How we work

Personal insurance (life, trauma, income protection, health, mortgage protection, TPD and business cover) is advice we give directly. For home, contents, car, landlord and business insurance, we arrange cover through Aon Insurance Brokers. For KiwiSaver, we compare funds and providers on fit for your age, goals and risk setting, not on which one you happened to sign up to years ago.

How we're paid

You don't pay us for advice. If you take up cover or a KiwiSaver plan, the provider pays us a commission. Where that creates a conflict, the law requires us to put your interests first, and it's set out in full in our disclosure statement.
